Places to eat and drink and shop:
The new Wolftrax Mountain Bike Centre is opposite the house. Apart from bike hire, pony trekking and good forest walks, there is a good Cafe open every day 10:00am-5:00pm every day, except Wednesdays
The nearest shop is Laggan Stores 2 miles. It has a good supply of essentials and a good range of pamphlets about local activities, go in and look around and ask questions.
Your nearest hotel is the Monadhliath 1.5 miles back to the junction with the A889 (marked INN on the map above) turn right at the junction heading for Dalwhinnie 100m up the road turn in left.
It has a small bar and does good bar meals and good kids meals. They also do take aways.
If you travel further up this road A889 to Dalwhinnie 9 miles, there is the Loch Ericht Hotel. Again this has a bar and does good meals, adults and kids.
Next is the Glen Hotel in Newtonmore 9 miles along the A86 heading towards Inverness. As you come into the village you will come to a Y junction. Turn right and the Glen is in front of you. Again good meals for adults and children with a wide varied menu, they also do pizza and take aways, all at reasonable prices.
Newtonmore also has a petrol station and a transport cafe, which despite what you may think serves excellent meals, again turn right at the Y junction for both of them. There is also a Co-oP supermarket further down the main street.
Further down the main street is the Waltzing Waters, a show not to be missed. Shows are every hour on the hour. And still further along the main street is half of the Scottish Folk Museum, the other half is in Kingussie.
Kingussie is 4 miles further on and has many hotels and restaurants. It also has a few interesting shops, so snoop around. There are also a couple of supermarkets but DO visit the Murchies Cost Cutter supermarket as they have the most astonishing things on their shelves.
Places to visit:
I have left you a range of pamphlets and copies of WHAT’S ON, there are too many to mention but a couple of MUST’s apart from the ones mentioned above are:-
Kingraig Wildlife Park about 5 miles further on from Kingussie, STAY ON THE OLD ROAD strait on after Kingussie and do not join the A9
Further up this same road is the LOCH INCH which has many activities to offer.
My next must do with the kids is even further up this same road through Aviemore, which is worth a stop, and head towards Carrbridge. Just as you enter the village is the Landmark Centre, great fun for all ages. Try to pick a dryish day.
There is too much to mention, save to say you should not be bored, do look through the Whats On guide as it has many attractions listed.
